WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ROOM IN THE HOUSE AND WHY?
Well it’s no surprise at the moment, with the cold weather and many people spending more time indoors, but it’s been revealed that the UK is a nation of lounge-lovers, with over half of all homeowners saying in a pre-covid home insurance survey that the living room is their favourite room at home.
Kitchens only score 6% in this particular survey, which would seem to be put to bed the myth that the kitchen is the heart of the home, but we would argue at Ochilview Developments that with many modern homes offering an open plan layout incorporating a lounge, dining and kitchen space, that overall it’s living space that people love most – and the more spacious and light filled the better.
When asked where people spend most of their waking hours at home, 54% said it was their living rooms, with the kitchen next (10%), closely followed by the study or home office (8%).
Home working may have changed these statistics of late, and has probably led to many more people wanting to move to somewhere bigger, or with a home office if they have not got one already.
Top answer for what people what to do most in the lounge? Enjoy peace and quiet came out as the top response, at just over 40%, with 24% saying they enjoyed the ‘noise and bustle’ of the lounge!
This particular survey, for Sainsbury’s Home Insurance, found that having a favourite room didn’t affect how much money people spend on it, with just 19% of people saying they had invested more money in their favourite room than the rest of the house. Overall, the survey found that people spent money evenly throughout the whole house, on décor, soft furnishings, furniture, and so on.
It’s a very interesting subject. If you buy a new property from a housebuilder that gives a really good spec as standard, you’ll find that you will have quality fixtures and fittings throughout, and can use your cash to enhance the home with all the little things that add character and pleasure to each room.
